A tragic Vision

1.—-The Giver and Plato’s Cave
In Plato’s "Allegory of the Cave" the people are born and raised in a cave. They are prisoners who are chained to the ground and there is a fire behind them that reflects shadows on the cave walls. All they know are the shadows on the walls. One day one of the prisoners escapes and goes outside the cave and sees the real world. He then returns to the cave to tell the other prisoners that their world is not the real world. The prisoners think the man who is escaped is crazy and they would rather remain in the cave. Relate this story to The Giver. How is it similar to Lois Lowry’s book? In what ways can you relate Plato’s Allegory and Lowry’s novel to your own world? Be detailed! Be specific!

2.—-Between Pain or Nothing
The American novelist William Faulkner once said, "Given the choice between the experience of pain and nothing, I would choose pain." How does Faulkner’s quote relate to The Giver? Can a utopia exist? Try to relate this idea to you own world or to yourself. Do people in society avoid pain? Do you avoid pain? Is there a danger in avoiding pain? Be honest! Be specific! 500 words or more!
