Jazz and Black Cinema both had roots in the 1920s; today independent and mainstream films which purport to reflect the African American experience are characterized by what Diawara calls the New Black Realism. Address the following two issues in your comments:
(1) Although significant filmmakers like Oscar Micheaux made numerous films throughout the 1920s, 30s, and 40s period, what were some of the obstacles to circulating Black films to the widest possible audience?
(2) Gender and racial roles in films about African Americans have been demonstrated in a variety of ways. Which of Diawara’s observations about the portrayal of Black women or Black men do you find the most interesting, and why?
