You may choose to use another text not from this class, but you must have instructor approval : Compare and contrast essays are big essay types in academic writing. These essays will follow a specific question and are fairly easy to complete. There are several ways to write this type of essay. The most important thing to re member is structure. Many wonderful essays fall victim to the woes of bad structure, making any ingenuity to fall by the wayside. Go over the rules on how to write a general essay, and then structure your compare/contrast essay in one of the following two formats. “Compare and Contrast” This classic writing prompt can be quite challenging because it sounds almost as if you are being asked to compile a list of similarities and differences. While a list might be of use in the planning stage, this prompt asks you to use what you discover to arrive at a conclusion about the two works under discussion. Please compose a compare and contrast essay using two of the stories and poems that we have discussed in class. Strategy: Find three or four elements from the tex ts upon which to base your comparison. Examine possible connections and determine a thesis. Base your outline around the elements you’ve chosen, remembering to give equal coverage to each side.
