Critically analyze an article from an historian point of view

You are to write an essay analyzing the document: 1 Mark A. Kishlansky, ed., Sources of the West, 3rd ed. (New York: Longman, 1998) xv-xx.

Write an account of what you can get out of the document, as if you were an historian encountering it.

Your paper should explain what you can learn from this document. Show the thinking that leads to your conclusions. Have a thesis that states something about the document’s usefulness and include in your introduction mention of the areas your essay will explore.

Pay attention to organization. It is recognized that you may not know much about the historical period that this document comes from so a few historical inaccuracies will not be held against you. The idea is to draw logical conclusions about the document but recognize that some of these will be tentative rather than definite. Suggest things and explain why you believe they make sense. You might consider counter-arguments to your points and explain why you don’t find them convincing. Look at individual sentences. What do they tell you? You may wish to include a section in your paper explaining what additional information you would need to be able to draw more conclusions.

Consider some of these angles. What assumptions does Mrs. Beeton make about middle-class life? What do you learn about expectations for men and women? What can you learn about attitudes towards the working class? Do you imagine many women followed this advice closely? You don’t have to answer these particular questions particularly if you prefer other ones.
