Read the article from the Wall Street Journal (the attached PDF file) concerning whether the growth rate of US GDP over the last two quarters can be sustained. The article discusses many of the key concepts we have covered in this course, although not always using the technical terms used in the textbook and in lectures. Pick out three specific arguments the author makes, either in support of or against the sustainability of 3% GDP growth, and use concepts, models, diagrams and identities from the textbook and lectures to analyze them. In other words, translate his journalist¬s peak into economist’s peak and his narrative into equations and diagrams that illustrate the points. Charts and graphs must be correctly labeled and tied to the specifics in the article. Assess whether the arguments the author makes are consistent with the theories and models you have learned in this course. Which of his arguments do you find the most compelling? Which do you find weak or unconvincing?
