Writing in the Media
Writing in the Media
Either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin
How much do we really need writing, anyway? This options allows you to consider the relationship between writing and the profession of your choice. Special attention is given to the way different forms of media depict that relationship.
In this essay, you will use media to argue for the single greatest way that writing / written communication plays a role in a profession you’ve chosen. To do this, you will need to identify a profession and select a form of media (photograph, movie, music video, YouTube clip, etc.) that represents your profession’s connection to writing. For instance, let’s say I want to focus my essay on being a real estate agent. My argument might be that modern-day real estate agents have to write listing descriptions and ads on a regular basis. To support my argument, I find a YouTube clip that demonstrates for professional real estate agents how to write ads that sell properties quickly. You may also pick a form of media that does not accurately represent your profession’s connection to written communication. For example, let’s say you want to be a lawyer. How does the film or book To Kill a Mockingbird inaccurately depict the kinds of writing lawyers do? Be sure the media you select offers a real-world example that supports your argument. This assignment requires that you conduct research (remember to cite your sources) to identify appropriate media, understand the profession you’ve chosen, and establish a connection between that profession and writing/written communication.
Your essay should contain a traditional thesis with a main point and two supporting points on which to focus the body paragraphs. Use proper MLA citation to give credit to your courses. Construct the thesis by answering the questions below:
1. What form of media can you choose that demonstrates a real-world example of your profession’s connection to writing?
2. What is the single greatest way that your chosen profession uses writing?
3. What are the two strongest supporting points for #2 above?
Questions to Consider:
o In what way does your chosen profession use writing?
o What role does technology play in how your profession approaches writing?
o What does your selected form of media say about how your profession engages in writing / written communication?
